The myth of King Oedipus has not lost its fascination to this day and has left its mark on literature, philosophy and psychology. Constanza Macras, who has been a driving force on the international dance scene in recent years, has now adapted this tragedy from the 1926 opera drama „Oedipus Rex“ by Igor Stravinsky and Jean Cocteau for the present.
In Oedipus Rex, Constanza Macras is concerned with the interplay between dance and music, singers and dancers, music and silence. True to Sophocles‘ original structure, she divides the piece into five scenes, preceded by a prologue of solos, duets and energetic group choreography. The scenes form a sequence of tableaux vivants. In them, Constanza Macras stages a fragile balance between seriousness and lightness, monumentality and fragility. The floating stage design by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota also refers to this duality of being, a theme that runs like a thread through the piece.
