Surprise—in the Body is a playful, tender workshop that explores the body through movement, voice, and shared experimentation. Together, we’ll gently disrupt the habits our bodies have learned through discipline, survival, and the urge to “perform.” Drawing from diverse movement practices, we’ll approach the body as a living archive of memory, resistance, and wild invention, seeking to surprise ourselves in the process. The workshop invites participants into a kind of joyful play, where we laugh, sweat, collapse, and ask: What happens when we stop trying to be clear, and let the mess speak instead?
Candaş Baş is a director, choreographer, and performer from Istanbul, living in Berlin. Her work consists of the investigation of human psychology through a socio-cultural perspective.
Her choreographic research is inspired by daily movement patterns and gestures, and how they push and shift the boundaries of human anatomy. She investigates how raw movement transforms through time and space. Her focus is on the nexus of politics, corporeal existence, and the symbiosis between socio-political dynamics explored through movement, sound, and text.
In Berlin, she currently takes part in Constanza Macras / Dorky Park on multiple works including The Hunger, Drama, The West, Stages of Crises, and The Pose. She created and performed eight solo works and choreographed Rusalka at Staatsoper Unter den Linden and danced with Dance On Ensemble.
Her work has been shown in Les Floraisons du Botanique FR, CCBE BE, IX. Festival Internacional de Danca Contemporanea Portugal, Sofia Dance Week BU,14.-15. and 16.Istanbul International Theatre Festival, IDANS, Diyalog Festival Berlin, Culturscapes Switzerland, Dansem FR, Question de danse France, New Sounds of Istanbul DE, Displaced Replaced DE, Radialsystem DE, NYU Cultural Centre Abu Dabhi.
Whether through chaotic physicality or quiet confrontation, Candaş’ performances live in the friction between memory and survival and an ongoing negotiation with displacement, belonging, and defiance.
