The Hunger Symposium
Digital content creators are actively changing the way we perceive ourselves, how we listen to stories, comment on life, enjoy a meal or learn how to dance.
THE HUNGER – SYMPOSIUM opens up spaces for an exchange between these new virtual practices and more traditional art forms (such as theater) that focuses on economies, reach, means and procedures of creation. It is a space for critical thought, playful experimentation and knowledge sharing. Addressing some of the problems raised by content production in social media platforms, it also brings to the forefront pertinent critical work emerging within it, that uses existing strategies and extends them outside hegemonic regimes of creativity, image production, humor and storytelling.
Showcasing content creators and artists from around the world, the symposium will take over different spaces of the Volksbühne during three days of workshops, shows, panel talks, conferences, concerts and a fashion show. It is also an ongoing virtual space for experimentation bridging digital content creation and IRL theater.

Love & Hate in Online Discourse
19:30 • Panel Talk • Mateja Meded • Ole Liebl • Matilda Jelitto • Muddern (Panel auf deutsch)
Content creators know both sides to having a big audience: the love from their community and the hate in their comment section. There seems to be no discourse online without intense feelings. Especially creators who dedicate themselves to important topics such as feminism, queerness, and inclusion are often the target not only of great enthusiasm but also of excessive vitriol. How do they find a balance between this love and hate?
We invited a group content of creators to share their experience of creating a platform for themselves while defending their own peace of mind.
Matilda Jelitto describes herself as „hot and disabled“ because she wants to show that self-confidence in one’s own body and a life with a hand deformity are not mutually exclusive. On her socials, she gives an insight into her everyday life with a disability and dispels prejudices.
On his channels on TikTok and Instagram, Ole Liebl explains various topics related to sexuality, gender and relationships from a scientific perspective. In his book „Loving Friends“ he explores the theme of sex and friendship.
Muddern is a rising star of the comedy Tiktok world with her iconic take on a gossip-loving East German mother of two who keeps getting involved in all kinds of drama. Aside from her character bits she shares wisdoms and advice with a side of sass and a heavy Berliner accent.
Mateja Meded is a theater and film actress, as well a writer. In her digital series Shitfluencers she tackles the strange world of influencing.

On Political Activisms and Digital Education
Talking about and processing hegemonic POVs around the world, inequalities and democracy with activists and educators from Social Media.
We invited a group of outstanding content creators, journalists, writers and artists to speak about the role of social media as a tool of activation and education.
Joris Lechêne is a content creator and trainer in Anti-racism, Bias, Privilege and decoloniality. He draws from both his lived experiences as a marginalised person at the intersections of race, neurodivergence, class and sexual orientation, and his practice of Sociology to propose analytical frameworks, create workshops, content and strategies tackling the topics of systemic inequalities, bias and decoloniality.
Maryam Palizban, born in 1981 in Iran, holds a doctorate in theater studies and is an author and actress. She lives in Berlin and has taught and performed in Berlin and Tehran. Two years ago, she took part in the Jina Revolution protests by publishing a picture without a headscarf and has since been involved in various oppositional feminist networks.
Malcolm Ohanwe became known through his work as a cultural and political journalist. He was involved as a face, on-air reporter or format developer in TV programs and wrote columns about identity in the immigration country.
சிந்துஜன் வரதராஜா (Sinthujan Varatharajah) is an essayist and political geographer. After years of political work on the protection of asylum seekers and stateless people their first book „an alle orte, die hinter uns liegen“ was published in 2022.

Kevin Slavin takes us on a journey towards the future, where AI represents a moment in which all human knowledge, conversation, and cultural production is being absorbed into a unified front-end interface. Like all mining processes, however, decisions are made in advance about where to dig, and what to extract. Are all of these good decisions?
Founder of Area/Code, former faculty at MIT Media Lab and teacher at NYU, Slavin works at the intersection of science, technology and culture, focusing on embracing complexity in systems and working to make them delight, not disappear.
