»The Past« is a two-part project focusing upon the art of memory. Our concept of the city is, to this day, separated into two constituent parts: the earthly and the spiritual. There is the city as a physical living space and the city as a state of mind. Since antiquity, memory has been linked to place and space: it has a relationship with the architecture. What happens when something traumatic occurs in a particular place, a destruction or bombardment? Can it be overcome by reconstruction and building anew? What happens to the people and their memories? In »The Past«, Constanza Macras and her company, DorkyPark, explore this relationship between memory and physical places. Working in close collaboration with composer Oscar Bianchi and his musicians, a landscape of sound – which plays such an important role in our formation of memory – will be created. Which sounds can be generated on a surface? How can memories, traumas and sounds be recreated? The second part of »The Past«, which will receive its premiere in spring 2016, will focus upon the uncoupling of memory and place in today’s digital age.
